The Advent Crown
The word Advent means arrival or coming, especially for one who is awaited. The Advent Crown has a red candle for each Sunday in Advent and a fifth white candle which is lit on Christmas Day. Each candle lit in turn represents part of the story that leads to Christ’s coming; the people of the world, the prophets, Mary the Mother of Christ and John the Baptist. As each candle is lit we move from darkness into the light of Christ’s birth on Christmas Day
At East Finchley Methodist Church we begin each service during Advent by lighting the candles on the Advent Crown and joining together in telling the story by singing ‘Advent candles tell the story'.
