Harvest Supper - A Visit from the Ambassador
Saturday 4 September 2014

Ambassador of BurundiOur annual Harvest Supper was honoured this year with a visit from the Ambassador of Burundi and three of his children. The church was decorated for harvest by Anna, Richard and Jane with garden produce, dried plants artifacts that remind us of a bountiful God. Robert and Graham prepared a three course meal for the 30 people that had gathered for the evening. Between theHarvest Dinner 2014

main course and the pudding the Ambassador spoke and outlined some of the work that is being carried among the poor of that country. This year's Harvest appeal by All We Can (The Methodist Relief and Development Fund) is highlighting its work in Burundi and the visit from the Ambassador brought this into focus.

This was a great start to our Harvest thanksgiving and the October Open Church that runs throughout the month.

EFM Birthday 2014

We have just celebrated our 192nd birthday and were delighted to invite our former pastor Brenda Dunstone to lead our Sunday morning service of celebration. Brenda arranged the service so that several of the congregation were involved in the prayers, meditations and readings which reflected on the events of Pentecost.

It was also a joy to welcome back some former members and friends of EFM to join in our celebrations and to meet with Brenda again.

EFM Birthday 2014Afterwards, we enjoyed fellowship over a shared faith lunch and, because the weather was so warm and sunny, we were able to move out into the church garden. Members and friends of the church had worked really hard to provide a wide range of main course dishes and puddings to tempt the appetite.

Of course, there was a birthday cake and a rousing 'Happy Birthday to EFM.

Mike Thomson Lecture
Sunday 19 January 2014

In the week before Holocaust Memorial Day and the year in which we remember the centenary of start of World War I, BBC Correspondent and Journalist of the Year, Mike Thomson provided a first hand insight into genocide in our world today at an alt.worship.God Extra on 19th January 2014.

Mike's talk was illustrated with some of his award winning and life risking reports from the lesser known front lines in Congo, the Central African Republic, Burma, North Korea and Sinai.  At times it was a harrowing journey into the dark heart of humanity. The congregation were encouraged to draw on their own spirituality for answers, as we looked at the tragic consequences of greed, fear and  prejudice on the lives of civilians, especially children. But, it was not a bleak evening, far from it, as Mike brought surprising stories of freedom, recovery and joy.

Live Music at EFM

Live Music is a series of monthly music events held at the church on second Sunday in each month (except January and August) at 7.30pm. Performers offer their services free and there is no charge for entry. A retiring collection is taken and donated to a charity of the performers choice. In May Pocket Penguins were the guest performers.

Good Friday decorated Cross

On Good Friday we hold a service of meditation and reflection. This year we decorated the cross with rags in an act of confession.

Each Easter Sunday at our celebration of the risen Christ we decorate the cross with flowers which represents new life. Everyone in the congregation takes part by adding flowers in 4 minutes of chaos which has a wondrous result.
